I've never really thought about this question until someone asked me, so when you thin clear coat for the first coat on wood, does it matter if you use gloss, satin, or matte? I've heard satin builds faster, but that's not the goal here, would satin be easier to sand?

It's funny, I was actually thinking the same thing while working on a maple shelf last year. To be honest, when it comes to those initial thinned coats, gloss, satin, or matte finishes all pretty much seal the wood similarly. Satin does have flattening agents in it, so it might be easier to sand between coats. I went with satin for mine, and it leveled out really well and was easy to prep before applying the topcoats. Unless you're aiming for a super glossy finish, satin is definitely a good, low-stress option.
@spraytechguru I've had the same experience. Satin is way easier to control for that first coat, especially if you're brushing and not spraying.

Guys, how are you finding satin easier to sand? It gums up and I absolutely hate the thing. For me, gloss is the preferred option because it's much easer to sand and isn't as rough as satin. As for building, drying and stuff like that, there's no difference at all, they all take a similar amount of time, so go with the one you have or you plan to get.
