Creating light orange peel texture on Hardie panel

I'm trying to apply a light orange peel texture to smooth Hardie Panel (fiber cement vertical siding). I want the look you'd get on interior drywall using a texture gun, not a gritty stucco finish. It's too much surface to roll by hand, what can I use in place of drywall mud for this application?

Sounds like a solid plan. If you're aiming for that nice light orange peel finish, why not thin out some joint compound until it's about the consistency of pancake batter? You can then spray it on using a hopper gun at around 20 to 40 PSI. If you're just tackling a few smaller areas, grabbing an orange peel spray can might be the way to go. Just make sure to prime the Hardie first, okay?

By the way, do you have a hopper gun on hand, or are you leaning more towards using spray cans and rollers? I'd love to hear your thoughts

I've got a hopper gun, so I'm leaning that way for coverage and consistency. Just wasn't sure about using joint compound outdoors...will it hold up, or should I mix something else?

Use a high build acrylic exterior texture or elastomeric coating, stuff made for siding, I dont know if you know but thinned drywall mud won't hold up outside but I think you could make it better by spraying it with a hopper gun and get the airflow up and that way you can get the light orange peel look

I was worried about using mud outdoors, so high-build acrylic sounds like the way to go. I'll test with a hopper gun, I can just hope it gives that light texture without cracking.
