I'm looking for tips and advice on the best way to apply a clear matte finish on this cedar ceiling im working on (old masters ascend matte) to a newly installed rough cedar ceiling for a repeat client, Key factors include: a rough side exposed, cedar installed 3-4 months ago, windy location, sustained 15 mph, freshwater channel near, planning two coats. The only sprayer I have is a HVLP with a 2qt pressure pot. Should I mini-roll and back brush? HVLP with back roll or back brush and HVLP only? Or brush only for rough cedar?

With rough cedar and the windy channel air, HVLP alone might not cut it. I'd go with one with back brushing, it helps push it into the grain and fights overspray loss. Brushing by hand gives best control if you've got the time. Two thin coats should do it, easy peasy

If it were me, I'd lean toward brushing or HVLP with a good back brush cos the rough cedar will drink the finish, and wind plus open grain makes it trick, Its no bed of roses cos brushing gets tedious, sure, but gives you control, anyway HVLP is still fine if you thin it right and don't mind chasing runs with a brush after. Either way, take your time it's cedar lol, it's gonna show the love or the laziness.

Has this been completed? I hope I'm not too late to the party!
I'd lean towards mini-rolling and back-brushing for both coats.
From experience, I can say this method works well for getting good coverage on uneven surfaces like rough cedar, especially into the nooks and crannies!

I completely agree! Whether you're brushing or using an HVLP sprayer with a back brush, it definitely offers the best control on rough cedar. Spending a little extra time on it truly makes a big difference
